New Hampshire Statehouse, clearing after a snowstorm

$240.00

2024 | Oil on archival paper mounted on panel | 5×7 inches

While waiting in my car to meet a friend on a cold winter day, a snow flurry blew in and cleared quickly afterwards.  I almost always have a small painting kit with me, and as I was parked right in front of the New Hampshire statehouse use, I took advantage of the opportunity and painted the view of the building as the sun burst through the clouds again.  The House Chambers in the statehouse houses the largest state legislature in the United States, with over 400 members, and to walk around the statehouse is to be treated to a sort of historical artifact and art museum-- it has paintings by former New Hampshire resident and American Impressionist painter Edmund Tarbell, statues by Daniel Chester French (sculptor of the Lincoln Memorial), as well as a whole host of other paintings, murals, and historical artifacts.  On this particular day, I enjoyed seeing the light and snow on the statue out front, which had to be indicated with a minuscule brush while painting at this size.  Pushing the effects of light on days like this is one of the constant joys of painting plein air, and is a way that I can express the emotion of being caught off guard by a scene like this in the course of my everyday life.

This painting is sold in a solid wood frame, as pictured.
