12×24 inches | oil on linen | 2021
I finished this painting on the summer solstice, 2021, during the Hudson River Fellowship at the Wethersfield Estate. The Hudson River Fellowship brings together a group of representational painters each summer for several weeks to work alongside each other painting landscapes. The Wethersfield Foundation, which maintains a 1200 acre estate of gardens, farms, and woods, generously hosted us during the summer of 2021. This view struck me every time I drove up towards the house, as the view opened up off the side of the road. While I was working on this painting, the clouds cast these dramatic shadows on the distant hills. I tried to capture a bit of the feeling of standing in that place at that time of year, with the long afternoons and warm summer sun cutting across the fields.
